Susan Saltonstall Duncan is the founder and president of RainMaking Oasis, Inc., a business development and management consulting firm that helps lawyers and law firms create, execute and evaluate effective strategic and business development initiatives. She has been working with law firms since 1980. Prior to forming RainMaking Oasis, Susan provided consulting services through her firm, Saltonstall & Associates, for thirteen years. She has worked with more than 100 law firms, other professional service entities and hundreds of individual practitioners to:
Conduct strategic planning and practice management processes and retreats
Conduct client and market research including client assessment interviews
Develop firmwide, practice group, industry, client team and individual lawyer
business development/marketing plans
Provide business development, marketing and client relations training and coaching
to lawyers and staff
Provide leadership training to partners, women and practice group leaders
Develop lateral integration and marketing strategies for firms and provide coaching
to individual laterals
Implement client service, marketing, business development and promotional strategies
Susan became one of the first in–house law firm marketing directors in the country in 1984 and is a founding member of the Legal Marketing Association. Prior to forming her consulting businesses, she worked in two national law firms – Pepper Hamilton and the Washington office of Cadwalader – where she assisted in organizing efforts in client and practice development, communications and public relations, governance and planning, attorney recruitment, performance evaluation and training and paralegal management. In 1988, Saltonstall & Associates was retained by more than thirty prominent law firms to manage a consortium of law firms and to assist in research and drafting of a White Paper for the American Bar Association on Ancillary Businesses.
Susan has been actively involved in the Legal Marketing Association (LMA) and most recently served as Board Member–at–Large of the New England Chapter. Susan’s articles have been published in numerous national publications and she currently is the author of “Rainmaking,” a quarterly column for the ABA’s Law Practice magazine. She speaks frequently for national and regional organizations throughout the country. Susan received her bachelor’s degree, Phi Beta Kappa, from Trinity College in Connecticut and completed graduate courses at Harvard University and New York University.
