Traditionally, law firms have elected leaders on the basis of their track record of building strong client relationships and big books of business.  General counsel similarly often served in prior stints as partners in major law firms.  In most cases, lawyer leaders have not received formal training to lead and manage effectively. As the legal industry transforms and becomes more difficult to manage, the scarcity of next generation leaders with the skills to lead their organizations/firms forward is creating gaps in the talent pipeline.
